Cancer patients in Durban will soon be able to undergo radiation therapy on a new device that is the first of its kind on the African continent.

The arrival of the new Equra Health Elekta Versa HD linear accelerator at The Oncology Centre in Ridge Road, Durban was cause for celebration. It represents the latest in international radiation therapy technology and is able to offer greater treatment accuracy.

But the best part for patients? The new Elekta Versa HD promises an improved experience for patients, as treatment times are shorter than on other devices. An ergonomic and more streamlined design also creates a more relaxing environment, a further benefit for patients.

“We look forward to delivering world-class treatment to our patients,” said Dr Leon Marais of The Oncology Centre. “This installation cements The Oncology Centre as one of the leading centres in South Africa, and indeed for Africa, with ground-breaking treatment techniques.”

The machine will become operational at the end of April 2015. It combines new radiotherapy techniques to deliver higher quality radiation therapy and treat a broader spectrum of cancers more effectively.

Equra Health is a South African company that offers administrative, operational and strategic management services in the cancer care domain. It is involved in 24 affiliated radiation oncology units and 20 chemotherapy units in all but one province in South Africa and is accredited by the Independent Clinical Oncology Network (ICON) to provide radiotherapy cancer treatment to both ICON and non-ICON patients.
